How to Plan Your Perfect Luxury Kitchen Remodel
A luxury kitchen remodel can be a daunting project. A quick Google search will provide thousands of beautiful pictures of amazing kitchens with exotic surfaces and unique features. On top of that, there are countless “Ultimate Guides” to kitchen remodeling eager to tell you how to renovate your kitchen. There is floor planning software, timeline templates, and advice on everything from demolition to hanging fixtures. However, one thing that most of this information overlooks is you. Your kitchen is a personal space, and it should be designed based on how you use it and your definition of the word “luxury”. So, instead of looking to the internet for help, start by looking within yourself. And to learn how to plan your perfect luxury kitchen remodel, keep reading.

What I’ve Learned From Experience
We talk to homeowners about kitchen remodeling all the time. Often, they have seen pictures of new kitchens and have some ideas of what they want. But when we start asking detailed questions about design and functionality, they realize just how many details go into planning for a new kitchen. Recently, we were on a consultation call with a homeowner in Clearwater Beach. We started the call by asking her how she used her kitchen. She started to answer and asked, “Does it really matter that much?” I told her it absolutely did. In fact, understanding how you use your kitchen is the first step in ensuring you get a new kitchen that’s perfect for you. We spent the next 45 minutes listening to her. On the drive home, I realized a blog on this would help everyone remodeling their kitchen, not just customers of Ambrose Remodeling.
Things to Consider When Planning Your Luxury Kitchen Remodel
How do you most use the space?
The first thing to consider when planning a luxury kitchen remodel is how you will use the space after the renovation is complete. Do you enjoy cooking or baking, and need a functional kitchen? Or do your kitchen activities mainly consist of making coffee and reheating takeaway food? In that case, are you more interested in a beautiful space that can serve several purposes?
Your answer to those questions will guide the planning process. They will determine what types of appliances you need and which features are important to you.
When You’re Serious About Cooking
If you want a working kitchen, your definition of luxury might include kitchen features that make food preparation convenient. For example, a large sink with a built-in colander slider would be helpful. Additionally, a custom-made cutting board that fits perfectly over a portion of the sink would make trimming vegetables easy. You can wash and drain them in the colander, then trim and cut them on the board, letting the waste fall directly into the garbage disposal. And all of it’s done without having to move the food away from the sink.
When You Have Other Priorities
If a show kitchen best suits your lifestyle, your definition of luxury might include other features, such as island seating or design elements that create a mood. You may focus on cabinet design and colors, backsplash materials, and flooring. We’ve seen a kitchen with elaborate crystal chandeliers and sconces that create beautiful lighting effects. The owners have a large dining room and host parties, but their children are grown and gone. On quiet nights, they eat in the kitchen. Their chandeliers and sconces create the intimate atmosphere they want while dining.
Regardless of how you will use your new kitchen, you define the concept of luxury. You can get ideas for design from pictures, but your perfect luxury kitchen remodel will come from what luxury means to you. The time you spend defining luxury will pay off when your remodel is complete and your new kitchen perfectly fits your lifestyle.
How good is your maid?
We know it shouldn’t matter, but your cleanliness standards should be taken into consideration when planning your kitchen remodel. Your standards can impact your choices in surfaces and fixtures. We have a client who does a lot of cooking and wanted a white kitchen floor. She chose a 24 X 12-inch porcelain tile with a glossy finish. She likes everything in her home to be spotlessly clean, and we recommended against her choice. Despite our recommendation, she still wanted the white tile floor, so we installed it. Six months later, she regretted it. Keeping the surface of the tiles clean wasn’t a problem. The problem was the grout. It got dirty and was hard to clean. In this case, an epoxy floor with no grout lines would have been a better choice.
Issues like this occur more than you might think. Crystal chandeliers in a kitchen can create ideal mood lighting, but keeping them clean could be a challenge. You need to take all of these things into consideration during the planning process. Otherwise, your luxury kitchen remodel could result in disappointment regardless of the type of kitchen you need.
What specialty appliances need countertop space?
There seems to be an appliance for everything you want. Do you love the perfect shot of espresso? If so, how would you like a plumbed, commercial-grade espresso machine sitting on the counter of your kitchen? Imagine the convenience of never having to go out for coffee drinks again! Do you drink premium wines or champagne? Why not have a six-bottle, better yet, a 10-bottle Cruvinet to preserve your wine after opening? That way, every glass will taste like it was on the day you opened the bottle. It would look so nice sitting on your kitchen counter next to a rack of stemware. Or maybe it’s best on a custom built-in near a beer tap?
The options are endless, and planning for specialty appliances is an important part of the luxury kitchen planning process. That’s because the dimensions of the appliance must be taken into account when planning surrounding cabinetry. If you’ve set your heart on a La Marzocco Linea Espresso Machine, it stands 21 inches tall and will not fit on a counter between standard-height upper and lower cabinets. But a custom cabinet will accommodate it.
You can get all the specialty appliances you want, but knowing exactly what you want before you lay out your kitchen is the only way to plan the kitchen of your dreams.
